British Gas Energy Tariffs in 2024 have risen once with the energy price cap. Like most energy companies in the UK, British Gas has to follow rules set by Ofgem about how much they can charge for their energy plans. These rules are called the energy price cap. It was introduced in early 2019 to make sure customers don't pay too much for their energy. The cap sets the highest price that British Gas Energy Tariffs can charge for their standard plans, which are usually the most expensive ones.
The cap keeps an eye on how much it costs companies to buy energy in bulk (wholesale prices) and then puts a limit on how much they can charge customers for it. British Gas energy tariff has generally priced its standard plan at around the same level as the cap since it started.
For a while, the cap didn't change much because the wholesale prices were steady. But in late 2021, these prices shot up, causing the cap to rise too.
As time went on, customers' cheaper British gas fixed tariffs came to an end. Since companies weren't offering new cheap plans to switch to, many customers ended up on the expensive standard plan. To help, the government introduced something called the Energy Price Guarantee. It set a maximum yearly cost of £2,500 for households using an average amount of energy and paying by direct debit. When the cap dropped to £2,074, it started influencing the prices of the standard plans again. Now, it's at £1,928 until March 31, 2024.
The table below shows how these rules have affected the prices of British Gas's standard plans over the years.
